Wintertime can be a hard time on your smile–the holiday food, the busy schedule, and unfortunately, the illness that so often accompanies this time of year. Here are some things you can do to take care of your smile.

First, make sure you are brushing and flossing every day (brushing twice a day). This is incredibly important as the holiday season continues. No one wants a cavity interrupting their holiday plans!

Holiday food brings its own set of problems. Many winter foods and drinks are full of sugars, acids, or both. There are the obvious ones–like candy, cookies, and hot chocolate– but there are also less obvious culprits: wine and alcoholic drinks, tea with sugar and lemon, sports drinks, and cough drops, for example. Be sure to limit these, or choose sugar-free options. Accompany all acid drinks with a tall glass of plain water.

Lastly, be sure to replace your toothbrush as necessary. Toothbrushes should be replaced every 3-4 months, and the holidays are a great time to do so! Treat yourself to a brush in your favorite color, or that electric toothbrush you have been eyeing for a while now.
